Biography:

Arthur Orville Anderson was born in Doyon, Ramsey County, North Dakota on December 6, 1909, to Robert and Olga Regina Johnson Anderson.  He entered the United States Army at Fort Snelling, Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 10, 1942, and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.  Private First Class Anderson was killed in action on May 1, 1945, in Okinawa, Japan and is buried in Block 5, Lot 44, Grave 6, Section GAR Cemetery, Devils Lake, North Dakota. 

From Find a Grave: Private First Class Arthur Orville Anderson (Service Number 37320892), born December 6, 1909, in Bartlett, Ramsey County, North Dakota, was the son of Robert and Olga Anderson. A farm laborer before the war, he entered the Army in November 1942 and trained in Hawaii with the 165th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. He served in the Pacific campaigns, earning the Silver Star for gallantry on Makin Island in 1943, when he singlehandedly fought off an enemy patrol to save his comrades. He was wounded on Saipan in June 1944 and awarded the Purple Heart. On May 1, 1945, during the ferocious battle for Okinawa, he was killed in action at age 35, qualifying him for a second Purple Heart (Oak Leaf Cluster). His remains were returned to North Dakota in 1949 and reinterred with full military honors in the GAR Cemetery at Devils Lake. He is remembered as a brave and selfless soldier who brought honor to his family, his regiment, and his country.
