Biography:
Bernard Alfred Anderson was born on the family farm in Kandiyohi Township, Burke County, North Dakota on March 25, 1928. He was the first of six children born to Bernard Alfred and Eva Esther (Mott) Anderson. He received the gift of God's saving grace through Holy Baptism on November 4, 1928 at the Nasareth Lutheran Congregation in the Vanville School House. In 1938, the family moved from Kandiyohi Township to Roseland Township and lived on "The Big Spring Place." He attended rural school until the family moved to Kenmare in the early 1940's. He was always called "Junior" by family and friends and when the family moved to Kenmare, he was nicknamed "Red" by his classmates. In the late 1940's he found his passion for working on cars and soon found a job in an automobile garage in Kenmare.
On August 12, 1950, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Lucille Murray at the Saint Agnes Catholic Church.
With the start of the Korean War in 1950, he entered into military service in the U.S. Army at Fargo on October 12, 1950. He was sent overseas where he served in both Korea and Japan until his death on March 29, 1952 in Japan.
Last rites were held April 26, 1952 with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Kenmare. He is buried in Lot 69, Grave 3.
The Rev. Edwin W. Petrusson, pastor of Nazareth Lutheran Church, officiated at the last rights for Cpl. Bernard Alfred Anderson Jr. who died March 29, (1952) in a U.S. Army Hospital in Japan. Services were held at 2 o'clock in the Nazareth Lutheran Church with the Ringen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Military Services were conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7049. The remains arrived in Kenmare, Friday afternoon, accompanied by SFC Ernest Jackson, military escort.
Don Thompson and Jack Munch formed the color guard; David Hector, Warren Evenson, color bearers, Darrell Kinsman, Adolph Nygaard and SFC Ernest Jackson, Flag presentation; bugler, Emil Granlund. Harold E. Carlson was soloist and Mrs. Walter Dahlund, organist. Serving as pallbearers were Gordon Christianson, Murt Coughlin, Darol Hagerud, James Schweyen, Duane Larson and Ronald Pumarlo. Burial was in the Rosehill Cemetery (Kenmare). Here from a distance to attend the last rites were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Murray, Mrs. Lorraine Adamson and Joan, Mr. and Mrs. John Sisco, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gage, Robbinsdale, Minn.; Andrew Mott, Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Boyce, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wagner, Williston. Christ Christensen, Eugene Timmermann, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Christensen, Mrs. Mary Christensen, Lyle Christensen, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Mehl, Mrs. Elmer Thompson, Mrs. Bill Denicus, Plentywood, Montana; Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Hoffman, Vista, California; Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Bogar, Mrs. Harold Hegerberg and Lawrence Mickelson of Minot.
