Biography:

Carl Bernhart Wasness was born on February 21, 1907, to Erick Olai and Randina Wasness in Aneta, Nelson County, North Dakota. Private First Class Wasness was killed in Hatten-Rittershoffen, Department du Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. This was the second phase of what is known as the Battle of the Buldge. The first attacks launched in Belgium on December 16, 1944, had the objective of the Port of Antwerp. The second phase, known as Operation North Wind by the Germans had the objective of recapturing Strasbourg. His unit was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for heroic participation in the battle fighting against the German 21st Panzer Division. Private First Class Wasness is buried at Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal Department des Vosges, Lorraine, France, Plot B, Row 31, Grave 35. He received Purple Heart award.
