Biography:

Daniel Holweger was born on March 8, 1918, to Jakob Holwagner and Caroline Hauck in Glen Ullin, Morton County, North Dakota. He entered the United States Army on April 18, 1941, and trained at Fort Snelling, Minnesota; Camp Claiborne, Louisiana; Fort Barrancas, Florida; Fort Dix, New Jersey; and Belfast, Ireland. Buried at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery. Staff Sergeant Holwagner was killed in action on February 4, 1944, in Italy, and is buried at Nettuno (Permanent Cemetery), Nettuno, Italy, Grave Number h14 19. He received the Good Conduct, the European, the American Defense Service Medals, the Presidential Citation, and the Purple Heart.
