Circumstances:

Killed in action aboard the USS Hoel (DD-533). Buried at sea.

Biography:

Killed in action aboard the USS Hoel when the destroyer engaged a superior Japanese naval force during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Philippines. The Hoel received more than 40 strikes and sank after the engine compartments were flooded.
