Biography:
Not a registrant, underage. Harley Berton Gallup was born in Ottawa, LaSalle County, Illinois on January 23, 1900, to William Spencer Gallup and Ida Julia Hongas Gallup. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at New England, Hettinger County, North Dakota on February 13, 1918. Private Gallup was sent to Parris Island, South Carolina and served at Quantico, Virginia, from April 17, 1918, to May 1918. He arrived in France, May 8, 1918, and served in 49th Company, 5th Regiment, from June 8, 1918, to July 9, 1918, and in the Replacement Battalion, from July 9, 1918, to July 12, 1918; 49th Company, from July 12, 1918, to his death on October 4, 1918. He died in Sommepy-Tahure, Departement de la Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France and is buried at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Department de la Meuse, Lorraine, France, Plot G, Row 23, Grave 11. Engagements: Chateau-Thierry; Aisne-Marne Offensive; Marbache Sector; St. Mihiel Offensive; Meuse-Argonne (Champagne). Awarded, Fourragere.
