Raised on the family farm with his sisters Eugenia and Hubertina, Peter left school after the sixth grade and worked as a farm laborer until drafted in March 1942. He trained at Camp Barkeley, Texas, and Fort Dix, New Jersey, before joining the 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, which landed in Normandy in June 1944 and fought in the brutal hedgerow battles near Cherbourg.
