Robert L. Haley

Lt. Haley was killed in action on Negros island in the Philippines on Jan. 5, 1945, while serving as an army air force pilot. He enlisted in the service at Fargo on Nov. 4, 1942, and reported for duty on Feb. 22, 1943. The youth attended the State Teachers college at Minot for a year after his graduation from Minot high school and then enrolled at the North Dakota Agricultural college at Fargo. A member of Mu Sigma Tau fraternity, he was active in sports and campus affairs. Lt. Haley, who was born Sept. 13, 1923, at New Rockford, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Haley, Minot. He also leaves a sister, Bernardine, Mrs. Forest Caufield, Garrison. At the requiem high mass, a cousin, Keith Stitzel, Minot, formerly of Bismarck, was among the pallbearers. Four other cousins, William B. Haley, Minot; Martin and Gerald Haley, Grand Forks; Duane Moorehouse, Grace City; and a school day friend, Richard Solga, Minot, also assisted. Burial was in Soldiers plot at Rosehill cemetery in Minot, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Crosskill, uncle and aunt of the young lieutenant, traveled from Bismarck to attend the rites.
