Leland Dave Klein was born in Munich, Cavalier County, North Dakota on May 24, 1924, to David Gottfried and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Waltner Klein. He entered the United States Navy in Farragut, Idaho on December 26, 1943, and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Radioman First Class Klein was killed in action on August 13, 1945, in Okinawa, Japan. He is buried in Alsen Cemetery, Alsen, Cavalier County, North Dakota.
