Graduated University of North Dakota with a bachelor's degree in philosophy in May of 1943. Resident of Morton County. Entered US Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on 30 June 1943. attended training at Camp Polk, Louisiana and Camp Livingston, Louisiana. Commissioned as a second lieutenant at Fort Benning, Georgia in November 1943. December 14, 1943 he married Clara Kautzmann at his parents home in Bismarck.
