Douglas Wayne Thompson was born on July 12, 1920, in Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota to Willis V and Ruby Edna Niles Thompson. He entered the United States Army on February 10, 1941. Staff Sergeant Thompson served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and was killed in action on May 5, 1945, at Negros Island and is buried at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines, Plot N, Row 7, Grave 155. He received Purple Heart award.

Private First Class Thompson was killed in action near Luxembourg and is buried at Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, Hamm, Canton de Luxembourg, Luxembourg, Cemetery Plot Number E, Cemetery Row 7, Grave 34; and Rainbow Valley Lutheran Cemetery, Wildrose, Williams County, North Dakota.
